Walzer Opening Night – Thousands of Women's Portraits

Walzer Opening Night – Thousands of Women's Portraits

Frieda Gustavs and Leo Erken discuss portraits of women, such as those in their VR experience Walzer which is made up of thousands of photographs. On women in struggle and how the makers look at the past.

poster Walzer (Leo Erken & Frieda Gustavs, NL 2022)
In the VR experience Walzer by Frieda Gustavs and Leo Erken, we take a journey through a landscape made up of thousands of photographs of women from the feminist First Wave (1850-1940). Using virtual reality technology, the makers have found a new, challenging way of making archival material accessible to all.

Relevance

The makers will discuss how they used the visual materials they found and how freely they interpreted and arranged the story of the women in the photographs. This demonstrates the continuing relevance of the question of the interrelatedness of aesthetics and political consciousness.

The waltz from the VR experience Walzer will be performed live to accompany the archival footage of suffragettes who struggled for votes for women in London in the 1910s.

Dolle Minas

A host of clips from films in the Eye collection featuring met women in struggle: alongside the suffragettes from the early twentieth century, these include the ‘Dolle Minas’ who fought for the right to abortion in Amsterdam in the 1970s under the slogan: “boss in our own bellies”.
