White Balls on Walls

The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam wants to be more inclusive and diverse, but that’s not as easy as it sounds. White Balls on Walls shows how the museum’s team tackled this socially sensitive, urgent and uncomfortable transition amongst themselves and with regard to the art collection.
The slogan ‘Meet The Icons of Modern Art’ is scraped off the glass wall of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Because who are those icons of modern art really? Who determines that and at whose expense? In 2019, when director Sarah Vos started filming this documentary, some 90% of the art on show at the Stedelijk Museum was made by white men. There has to be a better way think director Rein Wolfs and the Stedelijk Museum.
