Wild at Heart

David Lynch / US, 1990 / 125 min.

Lynch sends the two lovers Sailor and Lulu on a wild ride across America’s highways. The two are trying to get away from Lulu’s mother from hell and Sailor’s violent past. ‘If you’re truly wild at heart, you’ll fight for your dreams.’ IM David Lynch.

Sailor (Nicolas Cage) has just been released from prison, Lulu (Laura Dern) is the trashy vamp he worships and humiliates. The love-struck duo set off for New Orleans to paint the town red in their Lincoln Convertible, the archetypal American car. The only snag is how to shake off the contract killers Lulu's mother has sicced on them?

Lynch created a hyperbolically derailed, violent Southern Gothic melodrama replete with sexual tension and black humour. Sex, drugs & rock 'n’ roll in overdrive with, as a Lynchian encore, Willem Dafoe as 'Bobby Peru', the ominous criminal with poor dentition.
