Winter Brothers
Hlynur Palmason / DK, IS, 2017 / 94 min.
This striking debut shot in a raw and surrealist style is set in an alien and near-dystopic industrial landscape. The eccentric Emil and his elder brother Johan are miners working at a remote plant. Nobody takes much notice of Emil, until he is suspected of bringing illness upon a co-worker, after which he is ostracized from the mining community. As Emil begins to lose his grip on reality, the film switches to hallucinatory scenes that put us in the shoes of the neurotic Emil.

This portrait of a man trapped in merciless isolation is carried by an industrial soundscape. With Lars Mikkelsen. Winter Brothers is shot on analogue 16mm, featured in a 5:3 ratio.

Screened at prominent national and international festivals, yet never released in Dutch cinemas. Quite unjustly so, Eye Filmmuseum thinks, and so it has once again brought an exceptional selection of films from international festivals to the Netherlands.
