Eye on Art: Yuri Ancarani - Three Films

Visual artist Yuri Ancarani, director of one of this year's Previously Unreleased titles, Atlantide, will be at Eye on Tuesday 4 July for the screening of three of his previous films: Il Capo (2010), San Siro (2014) and The Challenge (2016).

Ancarani attracted attention two years ago with his feature film Atlantide, a hyper-realistic fiction and opera-esque portrait of Venetian teens and their ‘barchini’: small, super-fast speedboats. The film screens this summer as part of the Previously Unreleased programme.

The maker will be in Eye on Tuesday, 4 July, for the Eye on Art screening of three (short) films from his oeuvre, and will take part in an audience Q&A afterwards.

Yuri Ancarani (1972, Ravenna) is a visual artist and filmmaker. He teaches video art at the NABA Arts and Design Academy in Milan. His work has been exhibited in many galleries, museums and international film festivals.

Programme

  • Il capo (IT 2010) 15’

A wonderful sign language has sprung up in the quarries of Carrara. In a science-fiction landscape, a man directs a mechanical arm towards the marble. Episode from the three-part series The Malady of Iron.

  • San Siro (IT 2014) 26’

Anatomical examination of the football stadium where Milanese football clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan play their home games. With military precision, cameras follow the preparations on match day, resulting in a highly detailed architectural – almost anatomical – portrait of an arena. Episode from the series The Root of Evil.

  • The Challenge (IT/FR 2016) 69’

Ancarani crisscrosses the Persian Gulf with a falconer, on their way to a major competition. In a succession of fascinating images, Ancarani provides access to a bizarre, secret world of surrealistic luxury: falcons, sheikhs, Ferraris and cheetahs.
