Afscheidstournee
Cinema Ecologica
How to put on a climate-neutral play? Theatre group De Warme Winkel explored this question through a tour by bicycle, with documentary and live performance.

Actor and theatre-maker Vincent Rietveld, member of the collective De Warme Winkel, tells it like it is. “Consuming less sucks, of course”, he has said in various interviews to promote Afscheidstournee, an exceptional mix of filmed documentary, live performance and mild interaction.
Along with Manuel Boutreur (technical support) and Rob Smorenberg (performance, concept), Rietveld (performance, concept) toured theatres by bicycle from Ghent to Groningen, in the winter, in all weathers, pulling their decor and equipment in a trailer, staying overnight in the homes of audience members.
The aim was to investigate how a climate-neutral production could be made now that the necessity of changing our patterns of consumption has become inescapable.
Exercise in abstemiousness
Could classic asceticism work? Using a bicycle instead of a car, and not heating performance venues. An exercise in abstemiousness aimed at reducing the ecological footprint of the theatre world is what the three men were trying.
Shrinking and saving as the precondition for doing more with less. To try to keep things a little pleasant on this lump of rock, soon home to 8 billion people.
They made a documentary of the tour: Afscheidstournee will have its theatrical première in Eye.
