Johan (Martijn Lakemeier) is a young Dutch recruit sent to Indonesia with over a hundred thousand other soldiers to ‘restore order’ in the former Dutch East Indies during the war of independence. Johan gradually falls under the spell of the charismatic army commander Westerling, nicknamed The Turk (Marwan Kenzari).
