Grosse Freiheit
Sebastian Meise / AT, DE, 2021 / 116 min.
Devastating romantic drama about a prisoner struggling for his freedom in post-war Germany where homosexuality is illegal. Based on a true story. Actor Franz Rogowski (Transit, Undine) plays the charismatic lead. Winner of the Jury Prize in Cannes.
A decade after his debut Stilleben, award-winning Austrian director Sebastian Meise reveals the tragic fate of homosexuals in post-war Germany. Immediately after World War II, young Hans is often imprisoned for his illegal sex with a man. His prosecution is based on Paragraph 175 of the German penal code drawn up in 1871. ‘Basic homosexuality’ was only decriminalised in 1969.
