Documentary about the making of the chamber opera Si Fan (‘desire for love’) that was composed in 2015 for the Nieuw Ensemble by Chinese composer Guo Wenjing. Director Frank Scheffer who specialises in contemporary music documentaries, underlines the differences in ideas about music between the composer and the Nieuw Ensemble’s conductor, Ed Spanjaard.
In Si Fan (‘desire for love’) Guo combines traditional opera from Sichuan where he was born with his own music. 'I don’t think when composing, I just follow my heart,' Guo tells Ed Spanjaard, the conductor of the Nieuw Ensemble, who visits him in China to be introduced to the secrets of Sichuan opera.
