Almodóvar’s latest film is, in the director’s words, not about ‘self-sacrificing, heroic women’, but about ‘supremely imperfect mothers’. As we are accustomed to from the master stylist, he has put clad his moving drama in a lush, very perfect wrapper.
At a hospital in Madrid, two women give birth simultaneously. Janis (Penélope Cruz) is a successful photographer who became pregnant more or less by accident. The same applies for the much younger Ana (Milena Smit).
