Na de repetitie
Ingmar Bergman / SE, 1983 / 70 min.
The boundary between art and life has blurred completely for the director who plays the lead role in After the Rehearsal: the walls of the rehearsal space seem to coincide with the limits of his world. The theatre is his life. Here, he enters into a psychological duel with a young actress. This film inspired a play by Ivo van Hove: see the exhibition All About Theatre About Film.

Following his official farewell to the cinema with Fanny och Alexander (1982), Bergman was back scarcely a year later with the TV film Efter Repetitionen (After the Rehearsal). Using minimal means – a stage and three actors – the Swedish maestro allows us to look into the stirrings of the human soul and troubled relationships.
