Persona
Ingmar Bergman / SE, 1966 / 85 min.
Mysterious Ingmar Bergman classic with Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson as two women who switch identities in a little house on the coast. Bergman’s film inspired Ivo van Hove to create a play: see the exhibition All About Theatre About Film.
Persona is about a famous actress who collapses during a performance of Electra. She abruptly stops acting, and even speaking. It turns out the crisis is rooted in her feelings of guilt about her son: she feels unable to combine motherhood with her acting career. For her, theatre cannot take the place of life.
