In the tradition of his magnificent films on the heritage of the Soviet Union, Sergei Loznitsa once again draws on existing material. Over a period of four days in March 1953, every phase of the ceremony surrounding the funeral of Joseph Stalin was filmed.
From the bombastic announcements of Stalin’s death on 4 March 1953, in newspapers and on posters and billboards, through the endless procession of sobbing mourners bidding a final farewell to their ‘red tsar’, to his ceremonial entombment in the mausoleum: everything was recorded on film.
