The Ascent
Larisa Shepitko / SUHH, 1977 / 111 min.
The overpowering final film by Larisa Shepitko, one of the Soviet Union’s greatest film talents. This spiritual-transcendent masterpiece won her the Golden Bear at the Berlin film festival in 1977. The Ascent was restored by Mosfilm in 2018.
The Ascent – viewed globally as the best 1970s Soviet film – is set during the darkest days of the Second World War. Two peasant soldiers, cut off from the rest of the troops, trudge through the snowy forests of Belarus, seeking refuge among villagers. Their moving journey is one of betrayal and heroism.
