Robinson Crusoe is a doctor whiling away his days on an island full of refugees, including Friday, the sole survivor of a boat trying to reach Italy. Romanian Anca Damian has made a contemporary surreal animated fable-to-music about the wild adventures of Crusoe and Friday and their search for freedom.
Friday left Africa full of hope, but becomes stranded on an island off the coast of Italy, the sole survivor of a lost refugee boat. There, surrounded by fraudsters, border guards and mermaids, he meets doctor Robinson Crusoe. The two men go in search of the Promised Land, recognising one another as their own doppelgangers.
Pre-show
Prior to the screening of The Island, we will screen the short movie Le Dirigeable fantastique (3') by George Meliès from 1906 with a new score by John Sweeney.
