Filmmaker Jia Zhangke chronicles the lives of a lost generation of young adults growing up in a China that is starting to open to Western trends and influences.

Datong, North China. Xiao Ji and Bin are in their twenties. They spend their days hanging around town until one day Xiao Ji falls in love with Qiao, a dancer at a nightclub. Bin then decides to join the army. Qiao turns out to have a nasty mobster boyfriend, while Bib Bin’s medical assessment reveals he has hepatitis. Disillusioned, the two young men decide to rob a bank.
