The new and long-awaited film by artist Renzo Martens. When Martens is invited to attend the screening of his film Enjoy Poverty at London’s Tate Modern, he sees Unilever logos all over the museum. It provided the inspiration for White Cube, which exposes the relationship between Western art museums and the violent plantation system.
Many museums are built with profits derived from plantations. White Cube tells the story of an unlikely attempt to restructure the value chain of art. After a first hopelessly failed attempt by Renzo Martens himself, a group of plantation workers decide to create art. They unite in the Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (the Congolese Plantation Workers Art League, CATPC) and sculpt self-portraits of river clay which they then reproduce in chocolate using 3D technology.
