Maya Beiser plays Films for Cello

The world-renowned cellist Maya Beiser integrates three compositions with mesmerising films by the award-winning artist Bill Morrison.

Maya Beiser plays Films for Cello with films by Bill Morrison (US, 67’):

  • Cello Counterpoint by Steve Reich. Reich wrote this piece especially for cellist Maya Beiser. It premiered at the Barbican in London to mark Reich’s seventieth anniversary.
  • Just Ancient Loops by Michael Harrison was also written for Maya Beiser. The piece explores every aspect of the cello – from the most glorious and mysterious overtones to earthy and rhythmic pizzicatos.
  • All Vows by Michael Gordon is based on Kol Nidre and breathes new life into the prayer. The Washington Post described the work as a meditative piece that ‘sends the cello wandering pensively in a minimal landscape’.
  • Back to the Soil: premiere of the live version. A film by Bill Morrison with a score by David Lang. Back to the Soil is based on the travel diary kept by Bill Morrison’s grandfather, and the film he made in 1927 about the migration of more than 250,000 Soviet Jews to agricultural colonies in the Ukraine, Belorussia and the Crimea.
