28 Years Later

Danny Boyle / US, GB, 2025 / 115 min.

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have made the latest sequel to their inventive, terrifying tale of the outbreak of an ‘anger virus’ that turns people into flesh-eating zombies 28 Days Later (2002). Now with top-flight actors Ralph Fiennes and Jodie Comer as the leads.

The film is set 28 years after the Rage virus escaped from a medical research laboratory in London. Animal rights officials had freed a monkey infected with evil germs from its cage - whoever was bitten by the animal turned into a rage-possessed apparition with deadly intentions.

Sequel trilogy

28 Years Later could be considered the long-awaited conclusion of the post-apocalyptic zombie trilogy that started with 28 Days Later (2002, Danny Boyle & Alex Garland) and was followed by 28 Weeks Later (2007, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo).

However, the reunited duo Boyle and Garland have gotten a taste for it, with another film in the series planned, which was shot immediately after 28 Years Later. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, again written by Alex Garland and produced by Danny Boyle. Expected release: January 2026, after which two more sequels to be written by Garland will be released, completing a real sequel trilogy.
