A City Called Dragon
Chung Hsun Tu / TW, 1970 / 97 min.
A thrilling action film by King Hu’s assistant director. EYE devotes a special programme to King Hu, acknowledged martial arts film master.

A City Called Dragon is the missing link between King Hu's Dragon Inn (1967) and A Touch of Zen (1971). Tu was King Hu”s assistant director and Hu”s influence is palpable throughout the film – from the main theme (revolt against the authorities), to the suspense, the soundtrack, the action and especially the iconic role of actress Feng Hsu. A City Called Dragon featured the same actors as Dragon Inn and A Touch of Zen.A City Called Dragon is set in the Sung dynasty (960-1279). Rebels in the Taihang mountains are fighting for their freedom, and Miss Shang is on her way to Dragon City to make contact with rebel Chen Yang-xin. Chen is planning to hand her over the rebel plan book, but nothing is as it seems. Tu's film breathes a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere and reveals the lonely and heroic despair of the characters.
