A Silent Voice

Mind in Motion: A Silent Voice

A tender psychological drama with a colourful cast of characters telling a moving coming-of-age story, with animation provided by the acclaimed Japanese studio Kyoto Animation.

During elementary school, student Shouya Ishida used to be a bully targeting Shouko Nishimiya, a deaf girl in his class. As a result, he got ostracized by his peers, delving further into loneliness and severe social anxiety. Now in high school, Shouya realises he must repent for his actions, as he sets out to reconnect with Shouko and his former elementary school classmates and friends.

Bolstered by exceptional visuals featuring highly detailed character animations drawn by the masters at the Japanese studio Kyoto Animation, strong direction by auteur Naoko Yamada and a subtle, lingering soundtrack composed by the renowned Kensuke Ushio, A Silent Voice is not only a strong example of both coming-of-age and psychological fiction, but also a milestone for Japanese anime films.
