Nuri Bilge Ceylan / TR, FR, DE, SE, 2023 / 198 min.
A teacher is working in a remote part of Anatolia where the boundaries of what is acceptable in human desire are vague. This masterful film reveals the power dynamics in a close-knit community and the darkest reaches of the human soul.

Samet (Deniz Celiloglu) is a quick-witted but hot-tempered teacher and amateur photographer at the primary school in a traditional village in Anatolia. He dreams of a job in his home city, Istanbul, but in the meantime wiles away the time nihilistically, caught up in dark fantasies. Following a series of unexpected events that he struggles to comprehend, he loses all hope of escaping his oppressive life.

Eye Filmmuseum presents the first Dutch exhibition devoted to the work of acclaimed Turkish filmmaker and photographer Nuri Bilge Ceylan. For this occasion, the museum is bringing together his prize-winning films and lesser-known landscape photographs for the very first time. That combination reveals not only Ceylan’s masterly photographic eye and sense of composition, but also the deeply compassionate way he explores universal themes from a Turkish perspective.
