American Fiction

Cord Jefferson / US, 2023 / 117 min.

Biting satire on the literary world: a not very successful Black writer – his novels are not seen as ‘Black’ enough – writes the archetypal Black novel, crammed full of stereotypes. It storms up the bestseller lists. Cord Jefferson’s feature debut tackles identity politics and the pseudo political commitment of publishers.

Thelonious ‘Monk’ Wright is a respectable lecturer in literature at a respectable university. He also writes not very successful novels, inspired by the classics. In spite of his African-American heritage, he pays little attention in his work to themes such as identity or intersectionality, flagship issues of the (left-leaning) academic world. Wright is therefore not particularly popular among his students, and his publisher is not so impressed by the disappointing sales figures achieved by his books.
