Yun Choi: Where the Heart Goes_Poetry Collection (2022, 17’15’’)
Clinging to wealth as a measure of success: South Korean artist Yun Choi provides a subtle commentary on the turmoil of hyper-capitalism. In a trance-like monologue, structured around five of her poems, the words and images from the Seoul cityscape pass by.
Yun Choi (1989) has a residency at the Rijksakademie; in her work, she remixes language and images from popular culture into melancholy reflections.Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi: The Same Track (2022, 4’03’’)
Video work in which documentary footage of the participants in the Commonwealth Games is contrasted with footage of economic activity in former British colonies and Commonwealth countries.
Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi (New York, 1980) has had exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Peng Zuqiang: The Cyan Garden (2022, 8’05’’)
The Cyan Garden considers the limits of giving form to the past which cannot cohere into memory. In part filmed on ‘Lucky', a discontinued b&w 16mm film reel stock intended for military aerial detection, the moving image revolves around a radio station that was not supposed to be detected and an Airbnb apartment ‘The Lover’, run by the artist’s friend in their hometown.
Work by Peng Zuqiang has often been shown in the international circuit (including the 16th Istanbul Biennal), in the past, she stayed at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten.Claudia Martínez Garay: Ayataki (2022, 15’)
This video animation and surround-sound installation is a poetic lament for the loss of the Andean landscape and the fate of the Peruvians affected by war, terror and poverty. The score brings together original folk music with fragments of radio, hymns, commercials and news fragments.
Claudia Martínez Garay (1983 in Ayacucho, Peru) challenges the persistence of colonialist frameworks and official narratives informing our understanding of the pre-Columbian cultures. She is represented by GRIMM Gallery.Vibeke Mascini: Blind Men (2022, 11’21’’)
A washed-up whale lies on the zoological cutting table and is being examined – Mascini allows the camera to come very close to the skin of the animal and the cutting hands of the researchers, the viewer has to work for the overall picture.
Visual artist and writer Vibeke Mascini (1989) resides in a residency at the Rijksakademie, her publications are included in the Columbia University Library, New York and the Bibliothèque national de la France, Paris.
Hu Liwei: zhú mù nòng/The Riverside (2021, 2’45’’)
Artefacts from the ancient culture of the same name are being excavated along the Lianxi River; Chinese filmmaker Hu Liwei (1994) zooms in with her Super8 camera and turns the stills into a running narrative about how memory works in rapidly changing times: the invisible past made visible.
Hu Liwei is staying in a residency at the Rijkakademie.
