In his Apu trilogy, Satyajit Ray highlights daily life at the bottom of Indian society using the three life phases of the lead. This second part takes up the Roy family saga where Pather Panchali ended. The film won a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and made Ray’s name as one the most important international filmmakers. The Roys have moved from the fields and open skies to the chaos of the ancient city of Varanasi on the river Ganges, where Apu grows from a child into an adolescent.
