On the eve of World War Two and in contrast to contemporary morals, Valerie works to gain her independence from her ‘haute bourgeoise’ Finnish-Swedish family in Helsinki that doesn’t accept her lesbian orientation.

Valerie grows up with a tyrannical, philandering father who only feels contempt for his daughter, particularly when she falls in love with Kerstin, a German woman. Outrage develops when her father finds one of Valerie’s love letters. She is then forced to slowly emancipate herself from her dominant father.
The film is digitally restored by the Swedish Film Institute.
