Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans
Werner Herzog / US, 2009 / 121 min.
Three years after Rescue Dawn, Werner Herzog once again took on a relatively large-scale Hollywood production. A crime film that brutally goes beyond the boundaries of the genre. Crime doesn’t pay? With an unchained Nicolas Cage playing the lead, you just never know.
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina has devastated New Orleans, police officer Terrence McDonagh rescues a detainee from a flooded cell. An act of heroism that brings him – in addition to a promotion to lieutenant – a permanent back injury. From then on his body is never quite straight again – and nor are his ethics. McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) starts doing just about everything forbidden by God and his oath of office. He snorts drugs, gambles, blackmails, intimidates and enters into deals with murderers.
