Belle
Mamoru Hosoda / JP, 2021 / 121 min.
In this animation, 17-year old Suzu splits her time between contemporary Japan and the virtual world ‘U’ where she is Belle, a world famous singer. After Mirai, director Mamoru Hosoda made this visually stunning film about family ties, friendship and technology’s impact on relationships.
In real life, Suzu is an insecure teenager living in a small town with her father. However, online, in the virtual world of ‘U’, she is Belle, a successful singer with millions of followers. Because no one knows shy Suzu is the person behind the pop idol, she becomes increasingly trapped by this double life. Her meeting with the Beast, a mysterious creature in ‘U’, increasingly brings her on and offline lives together.
