Canadian-Hungarian filmmaker Sophy Romvari’s feature debut is a layered, subtle family portrait that can be read as a poignant meditation on memory, love and loss for which Romvari created her own special blend of documentary and fiction.
At age eight, Sasha moves with her Canadian-Hungarian family to idyllic Vancouver Island. Clear skies, endless nature and carefree days on the beach form the backdrop to her youth.
Pre-film
Before Blue Heron, you will see the short film Extrapolate (2') by Johan Rijpma from 2016. In this hand-drawn animation, a line is extended onto a grid. When the line leaves the grid, the process spreads into the surroundings and is reflected. Beyond every boundary, the extrapolation of motion causes distortion in a systematic but speculative way.
