Just like in Shoplifters, the leads in Kore-eda’s latest film are a surprising union of social outcasts. Mother So-young – played by South Korean pop star Lee Ji-eun – wants to give up her baby and ends up embroiled in a criminal adoption network.
Sang-hyeon and Dong-soo make good money stealing foundlings and then selling them on the adoption market. When mother So-young changes her mind about giving up her baby, she discovers the two men and their illegal practices.
