In rural Brazil, Irene does her best to keep her alcohol and disease ravished family together. A health worker makes un unusual proposal: why not ‘replace’ the poor, aging grandfather with someone who can help the family financially? She introduces a special type of boarder: the Argentinian criminal Miguel who faked his own death and needs to lie low for a while. Alternately charming and grumpy, he leaves the remaining three members of the family oddly fascinated, as Terence Stamp did in Pasolini’s Teorema.
