Chronicle of the Years of Fire
Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina / DZ, 1975 / 177 min.
Golden Palm winner in Cannes in 1975. This majestic epic meticulously depicts the long build-up to the Algerian War of Independence through a farmer’s eyes, providing a stark portrayal of colonial Algeria’s political and violent military history.
A meticulous chronicle of the development of the Algerian nationalist movement from 1939 until the start of the revolution on 1 November 1954. The film clearly reveals that the ‘Algerian war’ wasn’t an incident, but the culmination of a drawn out process of revolts and suffering. Amid this, Ahmed’s political consciousness awakes, under the watchful eye of his son, a symbol of the new Algeria.
