40-year old, mentally challenged Clara’s mother rules over her with an iron fist. Purple streamers surround their home in rural Costa Rica demarcating where Clara has to stay. However, when she sees her 15-year old niece’s new boyfriend, she undergoes a sexual awakening and escapes the confines of the streamers fort he first time in her life.
40-year old Clara is in her element among the animals and in nature, however purple streamers limit her freedom of movement to the yard of her home on the edge of the Costa Rican jungle. A hunchback with developmental issues, she lives under the protective regime of her dedicated mother Fresia, who views Clara’s issues as a sign of God’s providence and attributes healing powers to her. The villagers view her as a healer and the gift allows her to support the family.
