Conducting Mahler
Frank Scheffer / NL, 1996 / 72 min.
Documentary about the work of composer Gustav Mahler, made during a major Mahler festival that was held at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1995. On Sunday May 11th the film will be introduced by Marina Mahler, granddaughter of the composer.

A huge Mahler festival was organised in 1995 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Gustav Mahler’s entire oeuvre was performed for 17 days. Renowned international conductors including Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Chailly, Claudio Abbado, Ricardo Mutti and Simon Rattle came to the capital to play their interpretations of the Austrian composer’s diverse works.
In Frank Scheffer’s documentary they talk of their fascination for Mahler’s work. He also shows them rehearsing with their orchestras and how their performances differ, yet mainly how similar their interpretations are.
Conducting Mahler has now been restored and will be screened during the major Mahler festival at the Concertgebouw.
