Corpus Christi
Jan Komasa / PL, 2019 / 115 min.
This poignant story about a young ex-delinquent who has dreams of becoming a priest in a Polish town struggling with trauma was nominated for Best International Film at the Academy Awards and deservedly ranked high as audience favourite at the IFFR.
20-year-old Daniel (an impressive Bartosz Bielenia) was sentenced to juvenile imprisonment for a violent crime. He takes refuge in a small Polish town, where he is mistaken for a priest. Daniel plays along, and the villagers, too, are more than happy with this charismatic young ‘preacher’. They hope his arrival can help them cope with a tragedy that divides the community. Not everybody is ready to forgive, though.
