Empress Sissi of Austria became world famous thanks to Romy Schneider’s portrayal of her. Maria Kreutzer portrays Sissi at 40, the age at which women were expected to disappear. Vicky Krieps does an astounding job as the patriarchy-gagged, yet vivacious, proud empress.
She was beautiful, sympathetic and had an exceptional relationship with her people. Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (1837 - 1898), spouse of Franz Joseph, was the well-loved dream woman at court for years. Now Sissi has turned 40, the first grey hairs are appearing and her corset needs more tightening every time. The emperor goes in search of a younger mistress and Sissi is expected to disappear into the scenery.
