Cowboys
Anna Kerrigan / US, 2020 / 83 min.
Kerrigan transforms the cliches of the Western genre into a tender modern tale about a transgender child on the run in this original American indie film.
Anna Kerrigan’s second long feature film follows a father and son as they trek through the countryside of Montana. The two are on the run, keeping a low profile as they try to reach the Canadian border. Meanwhile Faith, an outsider in the local police force, is hot on their heels.
When Faith gets stuck in the case, she discovers the alleged kidnapping is not as clear cut as she was led to think. The father whisked away his transgender child to protect it from its uncompromising mother. Father Troy also has mental health problems and badly needs his medication. Director Anna Kerrigan created a powerful modern western that rings with emotional truthfulness. Her careful direction breaks with all stereotypes.
Winner of the Best Script Award and Best Actor Award (Steve Zahn) at the Tribeca Film Festival 2020.

Screened at prominent national and international festivals, yet never released in Dutch cinemas. Quite unjustly so, Eye Filmmuseum thinks, and so it has once again brought an exceptional selection of films from international festivals to the Netherlands.

Why in Eye
Once again a refreshing handling of the western genre by a female filmmaker, following Kelly Reichardt’s Meek's Cutoff and First Cow. Ten years after she debuted with Five Days Gone, Anna Kerrigan’s second feature film definitely deserves to be shown on the big screen.
