Crimes of the Future

David Cronenberg / CA, GR, FR, 2022 / 106 min.

The human body is living in an ever more artificial world, avant-garde performance artist Saul Tenser concludes. Isn’t it time to liberate our organs from their biological limitations? Cronenberg returns to intense body horror: this time with stars including Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart.

Viruses, parasites, rampaging cells or DNA from a fly that transforms a human being: in his early films (Shivers, The Brood, The Fly), David Cronenberg sketched how the human body can be taken over by malevolent forces that rob it of its humanity. The merging of man and technology is also a topic previously tackled by Cronenberg, to terrifying effect (Scanners, Videodrome, eXistenZ).

Pre-show

Screening of the short film Van vitaal belang (1953, 2'). This commercial is a puppet animation from Joop Geesink's Dollywood studios, and shows how the human body appears to be operated from the inside by small pink figures.
