Short films are exciting, versatile and have something to offer for everyone. It is also the medium through which young film talent presents itself for the first time. Yet short films often get little time on the silver screen. To draw more attention to short films, we have been celebrating Short Film Day for a few years now, on the shortest day of the year, both in the Netherlands and in various European countries.

Viewers can look forward to films by very talented makers, such as City of Poets (Sara Rajaei), which had its world premiere at the Berlinale and won the Golden Calf for Best Short Documentary this year at the Nederlands Film Festival, Marleen by Jop Leuven starring Laura Bakker who took home a Golden Calf for Best Leading Role in a Short Film. And Januari by Jetske Lieber won the KNF Award for Best Graduation Production in Utrecht. We'll start the programme at 16:31, the precise time of sunset on that day.

Programme

Lena is in group therapy, in which she talks about three defining relationships: with her father, with her first boyfriend and with Marleen, a colleague who she meet outside of work for the first time. It is Marleen's unexpectedly open attitude that makes Lena want to look at herself differently.

  • still City of Poets (Sara Rajaei, NL 2024)

City of Poets (Sara Rajaei, 2024, 22’)

In a small, semi-utopian city, all the streets are named after poets. When war begins, new neighborhoods emerge to accommodate the refugees. Soon the citizens find themselves lost amid the memories of the forgotten poets.

  • still Moustache (Idriss Nabil, NL 2024)

    Moustache (Idriss Nabil, 2024, 20’)

When Dalou (11) is confronted with his father’s absence, he decides to look for a ‘replacement’ together with his best friend Coco (12). But when this search proves harder than expected, their friendship is put to the test.

  • still Skroll (Marten Visser, NL 2024)

    Skroll (Marten Visser, 2024, 7’)

Humans and some kind of gnomes have posted videos on social media platforms in their animated dimension. This film is a short compilation of these clips.

  • still Januari (Jetske Lieber, NL 2024)

    Januari (Jetske Lieber, 2024, 24’)

For twenty-something Willem, January begins with a heavy dose of heartbreak. He is confronted with the question: who am I anymore, without my ex? Finding himself back, Willem struggles through typical Dutch birthdays, dark dance floors & climate action trainings. Like a chameleon, he goes through life, until Willem has to face his own colour.
