Dahomey
Mati Diop / FR, SN, BJ, 2024 / 69 min.
This surprising Mati Diop (Atlantique) documentary about the restitution of looted artworks won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. With this original blend of documentary and fiction, poetry and politics, Diop gives the younger generation a voice.

At the close of 2021, 26 treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey are about to leave Paris to return to their country of origin, the current Benin. For centuries, Dahomey was a cultural meeting place in west Africa, a place of European colonial conquest and the transatlantic slave trade. In 1892, the French attacked the royal palace and looted hundreds of treasures. In 2021, after years of reports, an agreement was concluded that a France would return a number of these works of art to Benin.
