De Keuze van Koolhoven: Night of the Gangs
In De Keuze van Koolhoven, filmmaker and irrepressible cinephile Martin Koolhoven (Winter in Wartime, Brimstone) talks about everything that makes film worthwhile, especially the rich history of the genre film, one of his great favourites. This month Koolhoven zeros in on the gang movie genre with The Wanderers (1979).
Director Philip Kaufman, himself born on the mean streets of Chicago, sketches the rivalry between youth gangs in the South Bronx, NYC, the scene of fierce clashes in the early 1960s.
The Italian The Wanderers confront the Wongs, the Ducky Boys and the Baldies led by Terror (played by the 340-pound cult actor Erland Van Lidth). The Wanderers, which contains some great rock ”n” roll classics, is an airy genre film that also has its moments of drama.
Martin Koolhoven explains his choice for Kaufman”s film and talks about his fascination for the gang movie based on a number of clips.
