Jarman jubilee

De keuze van Marlene Dumas: Jubilee

Artist Marlene Dumas has already screened excerpts during her programme Marlene Goes to the Movies on 28 October 2014. Brit Derek Jarman directed this punk-laden, cult classic from 1978. At the close of the 1970s he was primarily active as a maker of short underground productions. EYE will screen the film in its entirety.

Jubilee stars punks including Adam Ant and Toyah, and The Slits and Siouxsie and the Banshees have cameos in it. Brian Eno co-wrote the soundtrack. The title refers to Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977.An occultist transports Queen Elizabeth I to the rundown future Britain of the 1970s. Elizabeth II is dead, murdered during a robbery. Elizabeth I moves through the city's social and physical ruins. Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood protested against the film with a T-shirt bearing an 'open letter Jarman” who - she said - had misrepresented punk.Jubilee was selected by Marlene Dumas. In this, the second instalment of Marlene Goes to the Movies, she reminisces about the period immediately after moving from South Africa to the Netherlands. She came from an environment in which every work of art had political connotations. In the Netherlands she got the impression that political art was 'not done' and therefore sought out politically urgent art and film. She found that in the punk movement and the underground art scene with Jarman in the vanguard.
