Beautiful portrait of a group of less well known musicians such as the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest’s timpanists. Conductor Bernard Haitink called them “The republic of percussion”. Carmen Cobos’ previous documentaries were on Andris Nelsons and Daniele Gatti.
For De koninklijke republiek the Spanish-Dutch filmmaker Carmen Cobos was given exclusive access to an under-exposed group of Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest musicians: the percussion and timpani section. They play a supporting role, yet are absolutely indispensable. Never in the spotlights, the audience mainly notice them during the loud parts. Yet there is more to these talented men than meets the eye.
