A Dutch army commander clamps down on popular resistance with increasing brutality during the Indonesian War of Independence. The line between good and evil gets increasingly blurred for private Johan.

Indonesia, 1946. Johan (Martijn Lakemeier) is a young Dutch recruit sent to Indonesia with over a hundred thousand other soldiers to ‘restore order’ in the former Dutch East Indies during the war of independence. Johan gradually falls under the spell of the charismatic army commander Westerling, nicknamed The Turk (Marwan Kenzari).
