Dearest Fiona

Play trailer

Fiona Tan / NL, 2023 / 102 min.

A father’s letters to his daughter form the starting point of an unexpectedly emotional journey through time and space. In a hypnotic montage, Fiona Tan links her father’s letters to images of Dutch women in traditional costume, wintry scenes and work at the docks.

Out of shot, we hear the soft voice of a man: during the 1980s, Fiona Tan’s Indonesian-Chinese father regularly wrote from Australia to his daughter in Amsterdam. In the meantime, we see rare archive footage of everyday life in the Netherlands – mainly people working – a hypnotic montage of images from the silent film era. Through these documentary images, we get to know her father, their relationship and the times in which they live better.
