Death in Venice
Luchino Visconti / IT, FR, 1971 / 135 min.
A screening of Visconti’s magnum opus Death in Venice augments the documentary about Björn Andrésen, the young man who played ‘Tadzio’ in that film. Dirk Bogarde plays Gustav Aschenbach, the tormented composer who is struck by the absolute beauty of a 15-year-old boy at the Venice Lido.
Aschenbach is staying at the majestic Grand Hotel des Bains, recovering after the failed premiere of his latest work. The now 50-year-old composer wanders the deserted streets and alleyways of cholera-struck Venice, resting on the chairs at the Lido. Searching for inspiration and renewed vigour where death stalks the streets.
