East of Noon
Hala Elkoussy / NL, EG, 2024 / 109 min.
Impressive, opulently designed fable with a surreal undertone à la Fellini exposes the fate of rebellious youth in an imaginary autocratic enclave. Second feature film by Egyptian filmmaker and artist Hala Elkoussy, which premièred in Cannes.

Young musician Abdo finds himself within the walls of the grim industrial enclave East-12, located along the coast of Egypt. He is forced to work for bosses who are holding the population to ransom – such as the theatrical impresario Master Shawky – but his rebellious nature keeps rising to the surface. Every time conflict erupts, Abdo’s grandmother Galala – the city’s storyteller – tries to calm the situation.
