Être et avoir
Nicolas Philibert / FR, 2002 / 105 min.
Nicolas Philibert’s prize-laden documentary records daily life at a small rural school in the French Auvergne for a year. Être en avoir became a huge success and is now being screened again after a 2K restoration.

At a school with a single classroom, the teacher Georges Lopez teaches 13 children from the same village, ranging in age from 4 to 10 years old. The camera monitors their daily progress – the trials, the joy, the small dramas that occur. A boy who is sad because his father is ill, the naughty four-year-old Jojo with paint on his face and pencils up his nose. Lopez’s strict, but friendly, fatherly approach reveals that good teachers are mainly good at listening.
Screening of the 2K restoration, made by Laboratoire L21 under the supervision of director Nicolas Philibert.
