Eyes Wide Shut

Stanley Kubrick / US, GB, 1999 / 159 min.

Martin Scorsese, Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick loved to make use of the ominous sounds of Györgi Ligeti’s music. After 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining, Kubrick turned to Ligeti’s avant-garde compositions one more time: his last film Eyes Wide Shut features pieces from Ligeti’s Musica Ricercata II. The film will be screened in EYE as part of the Ligeti Festival in the Muziekgebouw.

William Hartford (Tom Cruise) is a well-respected doctor who ventures into the hidden nightlife of New York”s upper class to fulfil secret sexual desires. He is hounded by the thought of his wife”s potential infidelity. Alice (Nicole Kidman) has encountered a man for whom she “would give up everything”, without hesitation.

secret desires

For his sultry tale of Eyes Wide Shut , Kubrick based himself on Arthur Schnitzler”s Dream Story, in which the confession of secret fantasies shakes up an uneventful marriage. Kidman and Cruise were still married when Eyes Wide Shut was made.

The soundtrack features pieces from Ligeti”s Musica Ricercata, a rather menacing and ominous composition for piano consisting of sequences of discrete piano notes. The effect is that of echoes reinforcing each other: the tones in the high register are repeated in the low register and collide.
