Babak Jalali / US, 2023 / 88 min.

This fourth feature film from Iranian-British director Babak Jalali is a drily ironic portrait in black and white of Donya, an Afghan woman who was an interpreter for the Americans. On the displacement of the refugee – the jazzy score is striking, as is the effective use of silences in a dialogue-driven film.

After fleeing Afghanistan, Donya has ended up in Fremont, California, where she works for a family business making fortune cookies in a little factory. Day after day, Donya thinks up heartening mottos, which she puts in the cookies. At night she lies awake, her thoughts churning.

Preliminary film

Before Fremont, we will be showing the short animated film Through You (8') by Lucette Braune about a girl who literally has to fight through her fellow humans and the crowd in the city.
